Chef Giuseppe Ciuffa Opens Caroline’s Seaside Café

August 8, 2011, was the grand opening of Caroline’s Seaside Café at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Located on the second floor of the Scripps Seaside Forum, the café offers ocean-view indoor and outdoor dining and a menu of healthy, California-style cuisine. It is open to the public and also provides service to the faculty, staff, students and volunteers at the Institution.

Featuring organic, locally grown produce, hormone-free meats and poultry, seafood which meets sustainability criteria, as well as eco-friendly take-away containers, the café adheres to UCSD’s Sustainable Food Services Plan, which encourages campus vendors to incorporate sustainable practices into their businesses and use and sell Fair Trade products.

Menu options include breakfast items such as the Garden Pesto Scramble and Housemade Buttermilk Pancakes. For lunch, there are sandwiches, soups, salads, pasta, and griddle options, including the Natural Turkey & Sundried Tomato Wrap, Poached Pear & Baby Spinach Salad, and the Caprese Panini.

Caroline’s Seaside Café is operated by Giuseppe Ciuffa, who owns Giuseppe Restaurants & Fine Catering of La Jolla, which manages the Cafe at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, as well as Sculpture Court Cafe at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. The cafe was named in honor of a member of the family of long-time Scripps Director William E. Nierenberg, who passed away in 2000.

The café is located on the second floor of Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society & the Environment (Scripps Seaside Forum) at 8610 Kennel Way, La Jolla.
