China has a reputation for producing counterfeit gadgets, software and clothing but a recent discovery by an American living in China has uncovered a new milestone in piracy—fake Apple stores.
The anonymous American posted photos on her blog of three shops portraying themselves as Apple stores in the city of Kunming in the Yunnan province. She claims the setup was so authentic that the “employees themselves seemed to believe they worked for Apple.”
The stores feature the classic winding staircase, an upstairs sitting area and the employees wear the blue T-shirts with name tags around their necks. Yet, the giveaway that something was not right was a big sign labeled “Apple Store,” whereas the real stores only display the iconic logo with no text.
The three stores are not listed on Apple’s website as authorized resellers and only four company stores are registered in China—two in Beijing and two in Shanghai, with plans to open another in Shanghai and Hong Kong by year’s end. Trade groups say illegal Chinese counterfeiting of everything from clothing to technological products costs the real companies billions in revenue annually.
